Our psychoeducation groups help clients better understand the relationship between the brain, body, mental health and substance use. Sessions explore how addiction can develop and affect how the brain is wired and functions.
Understanding the Effects of Addiction
This includes the influence of substances on areas involved in reward, motivation, decision-making, impulse control, memory and emotional regulation.
Clients also learn about the short- and long-term effects that different substances can have on brain and bodily functioning, as well as the changes that can occur during withdrawal and recovery.
By making this information accessible and relevant to a person’s own experiences, psychoeducation helps reduce misconceptions about addiction, encourages greater self-awareness and provides clients with knowledge they can use to make informed decisions and support their ongoing recovery.
Long term substance abuse can lead to permanent changes in a person’s brain, and part of recovery is understanding and managing that in order to achieve and maintain maximum functioning and quality of life.
