Family Support Group Counselling

At Freeman House Recovery, we understand that addiction affects not only your loved one, but the whole family. Our family support program offers a safe, supportive space for families to speak about their fears and experiences, and to meet other families walking the same road — supporting a loved one through treatment at Freeman House. It’s deeply comforting for families to feel seen, accepted, and understood. We work to break the stigma around the idea that addiction is “something that happens to other families,” not our own.

The Importance of Family Involvement

Research shows that a loved one’s progress during treatment, and their odds of maintaining recovery after discharge, are significantly boosted by family involvement — families who stay engaged are nearly twice as likely to see their loved one complete treatment, and that benefit still holds a year later. Family involvement isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s part of the treatment.

Our Family Program Involves:

Weekly Family Education & Support Groups (Zoom)

We encourage families to join our weekly support groups on Zoom, where we share insight and practical tools for navigating difficult conversations — including enabling vs. supporting, healthy boundaries, codependency, rebuilding trust, self-care, and forgiveness. This work is designed to help families heal together, not just alongside their loved one’s recovery.

Extended Post-Care Family Support

Many families of past clients continue attending our support groups long after their loved ones have completed treatment. These family members share their lived experience, offering encouragement and perspective to families who are just beginning this journey.

Weekly One-on-One Family Sessions

Held online or face-to-face for local families, these sessions support each family member’s personal healing journey — with practical therapeutic tools and regular progress updates on their loved one’s treatment.

Final Family Meetings Before Discharge

As discharge approaches, we hold final family meetings to talk through the road ahead: realistic expectations, a discharge recovery strategy, and post-treatment recommendations — so families leave feeling prepared, not just hopeful.
